What is the Difference between Cosmetic and Medically Necessary Dental Implant Coverage?

Contact Us

The primary difference between cosmetic and medically necessary dental implant coverage lies in whether the procedure is considered elective for appearance or essential for physical function.

Insurers typically use the following distinctions to determine coverage:

  • Cosmetic Coverage: This classification applies to implants placed solely to fill a gap from a long-missing tooth where no functional problem exists. Insurance plans generally exclude or provide minimal coverage for treatments deemed elective for appearance.
  • Medically Necessary Coverage: This applies when an implant is required to restore the ability to chew or is needed following a trauma. These procedures have a much higher likelihood of being covered, often qualifying for partial or full reimbursement.

This classification is the most significant factor in determining your out-of-pocket costs. Even when an implant is deemed medically necessary, many insurance plans use a two-phase approach where they may cover the restorative stage (the crown) but exclude the surgical stage (the placement of the implant post).
