There are four primary types of dental bridges available to address missing teeth, each suited to different clinical needs:
- Traditional Bridges: This is the most common type, consisting of false teeth (pontics) held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the healthy abutment teeth on either side of the gap. They are typically made of porcelain-fused-to-metal for a balance of strength and aesthetics.
- Maryland Bridges (Resin-Bonded): These are a more conservative option often used for front teeth. Instead of using crowns, they employ metal or porcelain wings that are bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth, requiring minimal tooth preparation.
- Cantilever Bridges: These are used when there is an adjacent tooth on only one side of the gap. The pontic is supported by a crown on just one anchor tooth. Because they put more stress on a single tooth, they are usually recommended for short spans.
- Implant-Supported Bridges: These do not rely on natural teeth for support. Instead, they are anchored to titanium posts surgically placed in the jawbone. This type is highly durable and does not require altering nearby healthy teeth, though it involves a longer procedure timeline.
